Le scénariste Jean-David Morvan a le chic pour découvrir des talents graphiques « made in Asia » hors-normes. Après le Coréen Kim Jung-gi, voici le Philippin Rey Macutay ! Formé à l’exigeante école du storyboard pour les studios d’animation de Manille, il rêve depuis toujours de faire de la bande dessinée. Ce sera chose faite quand J-D Morvan lui confie le dessin de Jaurès (2014) et, surtout, de Ravage (2016), dont le second volet parait en septembre. Les deux créateurs s’y livrent à une relecture moderne du chef-d’œuvre de René Barjavel. Véritable baroudeur graphique, Macutay y allie le dynamisme des comics et des mangas, tout en ayant intégré la lisibilité de la bande dessinée européenne. Cadrages osés, planches composées à l’image de tableaux et énergie vitale du dessin, Rey Macutay n’a peur de rien. S’inscrivant dans le cadre de la Fête de la BD de la Région Bruxelles-Capitale, l’exposition – une première mondiale – présente des planches majeures de Jaurès, d’Outlaw Territory et de Ravage.
The writer Jean-David Morvan has the knack for discover extraordinary graphic talents « made in Asia ». After the Korean Kim Jung-gi, here comes the Filipino Rey Macutay! Trained in the demanding school of storyboarding for animation studios in Manila, he always dreamed of making comics. This came true when J-D Morvan entrusted him with the drawing of Jaurès (2014) and, especially, of Ravage (2016), the second part of which appears in September. The two creators are devoting themselves to a modern rereading of René Barjavel‘s masterpiece. Macutay is a genuine graphic adventurer, combining the dynamics of comic books and manga, while integrating the legibility of European comics. In his audacious framing, his pages composed in the image of paintings, and his drawing alive with energy, Rey Macutay is not afraid of anything. As part of the Brussels Comics Festival, this exhibition – a world premiere – features pages from Jaurès, Outlaw Territory and Ravage.
Scenarist Jean-David Morvan heeft een neus voor het ontdekken van buitengewoon grafisch talent “made in Asia”. Na de Koreaan Kim Jung-Gi hebben we nu de Filipijn Rey Macutay (1972)! Na een opleiding aan de veeleisende storyboard school voor de animatiestudio’s in Manilla, droomde hij de hele tijd van strips tekenen. En die droom wordt waarheid wanneer J-D Morvan hem het tekenwerk toevertrouwt van Jaurès (2014) en vooral Ravage (2016) waarvan het tweede deel in september verschijnt. De twee scheppers maken er een moderne versie van het meesterwerk van René Barjavel. Als echte grafische globetrotter verenigt Macutay er het dynamisme van de Comic Books en de Manga met toch de totale leesbaarheid van het Europese stripverhaal. Gedurfde lay-out, platen gecomponeerd als schilderijen en een vitale tekenenergie, Rey Macutay deinst voor niets terug. Deze tentoonstelling, in het kader van het Stripfeest van Brussel, een wereldpremière, brengt de platen van Jaurès, van Outlaw Territory en van Ravage.
