Berck - Strapontin

Arthur Berckmans (1929-2020), known as Berck, was a giant of Franco-Belgian comics, whose career spanned from 1948 to 1994. The Galerie Champaka exhibition focuses on his two star characters: Strapontin and Sammy.

Strapontin drove his taxi into the pages of the Journal de Tintin in 1958, based on a story by René Goscinny, quickly sparking a prodigious collaboration between the two creators. In 1968, Berck left Tintin for Spirou and took the opportunity to switch from pen-lines to brushstrokes. In 1969, he proposed to Raoul Cauvin,  the future scriptwriting giant, to invent some detective characters set in the 1920s and 1930s. Cauvin comes up with an agency of « Gorillas of every type » operating during Prohibition. Influenced at first by Macherot and then by Franquin, Berck finds his own approach thank to his implacable code of conduct: the drawing alone should be enough to understand the story, the text brings some additional nuances and finesse.

The first “Sammy” appeared in 1970 in Spirou and, from album to album (31 in total!), Sammy Day and Jack Hattaway traveled around the world. Accidents, pile-ups, fights, frantic pursuits follow one another at a furious pace under the brush of this great draftsman of movement.

Galerie Champaka has the great pleasure of presenting 24 original pages from Strapontin and 60 pages from Sammy, so many peaks in Berck’s dynamic art of comics!
