«Back to the Eighties»

A major figure in the heyday of Métal Hurlant, and a leading illustrator for the magazines New Musical Express (Great Britain), Rock’n Folk (France), and Player (Japan), Serge Clerc single-handedly created ‘Rock Comics’. He dazzlingly captured the atmosphere of Parisian nightclubs and raised sumptuous creatures onto dizzying stiletto heels.

A missing link between the classicism of the so-called « Marcinelle » school and the modernity of the Métal Hurlant group, Serge Clerc not only initiated the concept of ‘Rock Comics’, but for nearly 10 years, he was also the star illustrator for three leading international rock magazines. He crossed paths with ‘The Clash’, ‘The Cramps’, and ‘Police’; he haunted the nights of Paris, London, Brussels, and New York. Between the binary rhythm of a bass and the fleeting swaying of a blonde’s hips, he also drew extensively.

Of all the leading artists of the 1980s, Serge Clerc was certainly the one most in tune with his times. The aesthete doubled as a graphic artist whose easily identifiable look would grace walls across France. Very quickly, the deceptive simplicity of his style and the precise geometry of his compositions would inspire an entire generation of artists.

With the Back to the Eighties exhibition, Galerie Champaka has the privilege of presenting an extraordinary constellation of graphic gems, as well as ultra-limited edition pigment-ink prints.
