Max l’explorateur

29/04 > 22/05/2021

The Champaka Gallery is privileged to present an exhibition dedicated to Max the Explorer who, along with Tintin, is the most famous Belgian hero in the world! Created by Guy Bara (1923-2003), this timeless character debuted in 1955 in the daily newspaper France-Soir, before being welcomed into the Evening Standard (London), and Het Laatste Nieuws and Le Soir (Brussels). The gag strips of Max the Explorer went on to appear in over 40 countries! Not forgetting newly created comics pages for the weeklies Spirou and Tintin.

The secret to Max the Explorer’s international success can be explained by, among other things, its sumptuous drawing, its use of absurd situations, its playful poetry and a remarkable character. Max is a distracted clown who has swapped his red nose for a white hat. Like Schulz (Peanuts), that other archangel of the newspaper strip, Bara’s art is immediately understandable. Readers feel a bond with it and appreciate its universe of humor,  as elegant as it is direct.
